Description
Trajan was a Roman emperor, known for his social welfare programmes and philantropic rule.
The head and torso of this sculpture did not originally go together, the head is the emperor's, and the body is presumed to be of a gladiator. It can be traced back to Andrea Vendramin (a Venetian Doge), and was in the collection of the Reynst brothers in Amsterdam since 1629.
