This wooden sculpture (decorated with gold lacquer) originates from Yongji of the Shanxi Province, carved in the 15th Century (Ming dynasty) and depicts Puxian (Samantabhadra). Puxian is the bodhisattva of universal wisdom and a steady companion of Guanyin. The deity, dressed in a ricly embroidered robe embellished with sumptuous chainwork, sits in Western fashion, legs pendant, on an elephant mound (no longer extant).
