The athletlic body of the Discobolus is captured just as he lifts the discus high above his left shoulder. The sculpture is based on a more rigid archaic model, the bronze statue by the sculptor Pythagoras of Reggio (470 - 469 BC) or the statue of an athlete mentionned in an inscription of the 5th Century as being on the Athenian Acropolis.
