Officially Extinct in 1627
Bos primigenius, also known as the aurochs, was a species of large wild cattle that was native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa.
It was one of the largest herbivores of its time, with males reaching up to 6.5 feet (2 meters) tall at the shoulder and weighing over 1,500 pounds (680 kg).
The aurochs played an important role in human history, as it was domesticated in the Middle East around 8,000 years ago and used for meat, milk, and as a draft animal. However, the last wild aurochs died in the early 17th century and the domesticated population gradually declined in numbers until it became extinct in 1627.
