Starting as a child prodigy, the gifted Lawrence succeeded Reynolds as Britain's greatest portrait painter. He created the image of Regency high-society with his dazzling brushwork and innovative use of colour. His international reputation was made when the Prince Regent commissioned portraits of all the leaders invoiced in the defeat of Napoleon. Lawrence became President of the Royal Academy in 1820
